A book cover for Liz Moore’s novel, “Heft”. The story is set in Brooklyn, New York, and in autumn-winter season, hence this colour. Could be a bit confusing if you are having spring now! It was a design renewal and this version resulted in a descriptive approach.

Liz Mooreの”Heft”という小説のカバーを制作しました。今回はデザインのリニューアルで、出版元が変わるたびに違うデザインを採用したりするので、同 じ本のカバーに複数のバージョンがあります。今回はブルックリン特有のストーンビルディングと登場人物を入れて…というのが必須条件で、描写的なアプ ローチになりました。一応日本のAmazonからも購入可能です。

Still have a couple of published work I haven’t put up here… but today this book is finally out! It’s a quote book on love and marriage, illustrated by me. I did the lettering too, but I did not invent this Japanese-English! Some of the inside illustrations can be seen here.

It’s done in an unbelievably fast turnaround… and all complete! Really appreciate the designer’s help!
ものすごくシンプルで心配になるほどの絵ですが、デザイナーさんが素敵に仕上げてくれました。タイトルがなんだか過激…でも内容はそこまで過激じゃなかったです。

I was leaving this painting unfinished for long, but it’s finally done. It’s a remake of the image I made before as a book cover for ‘Bloody Chamber and Other Stories’ by Angela Carter (lower right). The colour turned out to be different from what I wanted (needs to be darker and creepier), but hope it’s still fine. I added emboss on the ruby choker, a fun part which cannot be done on computer.

以前作ったブックカバー（右下）を全てアナログで作ってみようとしていたものが、長らくの放置後、なんとか完成。アンジェラ・カーターの『血染めの部屋』という話のブックカバーを想定して作ったのですが、色が思い描いていたより不気味さに欠けてしまい…でもエンボスを加えてみたりして楽しかったです！題材からしてあまり飾る気にはならなそうなので、お蔵入り…？

Book cover for a self-help book (on the right), which basically explains lots of good points about becoming an early riser… I am quite bad at getting up early so this should be for me! I’ve done one for the same author before (left) so it’s the second one. They always wear these ad slips so they have to work with and without it!

横森理香さん著『早起き生活のススメ』のカバーとスポットイラストを描きました。一番苦手なものといえば早起きと断言できるくらいの私ですが、この本を読んで精進したいと思います…。

I made a book cover for a self-help book by Rika Yokomori! This book explains how you can clear your mind and make everything run better just by tidying up your room. Sounds like an exaggeration when I put like this, but it’s true.

We had a really tight schedule but both the publisher and the designer were very quick to get back to me so it went well. The image below is the final image I sent (before trimming). The designer made some changes to it and it turned out just like a real cover!

横森理香さん著「横森式おかたづけ術」（アスペクト出版）の表紙イラストを担当しました！私のつたない説明だとうまく伝わらないかもしれませんが、一言でいうと、身の回りをいつも整頓しておくことが精神状態にどれほど良い効果を生み出すか、という内容です。

とてもタイトなスケジュールだったのですが、出版社の方もデザイナーさんも、私のラフに素早く返答してきてくれて、とてもスムーズに進みました！当初のファイナル（トリミング前）はこんな感じだったのですが、

秋っぽい感じにしたいというご要望でカーペットを暖色を変更、それからバックがちょっと暗かったので白くしたり、その他デザイナーさんの手ですっかり表紙らしくなりました！中身もイラストをふんだんに入れていただいて、かわいらしい仕上がりです。今週末くらいから本屋さんに登場です。

I’ve already mentioned it on my website, but I thought I would talk a bit more here. This is a mock-up of the book cover I created for a competition. Actually I made it after the entry just to see how it looks like. This kind of classic fiction is likely to be a paperback.

In the competition I had to choose one or more titles from their list. I’ve picked ‘Bonjour Tristesse’ by F. Sagan as I had not read it properly, and I wanted to add some modern look to the existing cover. The existing cover uses a photo but it was a bit out of date (looks like 80s, I think), and not really reflecting the story.

My intention was to show a subtle sadness in a place where everyone is supposed to be happy (summer holiday in French coast).

I entered a couple of other titles too and unfortunately none of them won a prize, but I was shortlisted (I don’t know for which one yet). You can see the winners’ works here. I felt that most are rather abstract and somehow artistic (not particularly design-oriented). But they have different judges each year and it might not be the case next year.

ギャラリー主催の装画コンペに出した作品の一つ。エントリー時はタイトルや著者名を入れることはおろか、もちろんこんな模型を送ることは許されていません…ので、勝手に自分で作ってみました。受賞はしませんでしたが、エントリー作品のどれかは最終選考に残ったようです。
